This site is to compliment the very popular Facebook Group “Feed Yourself for a £1 A Day”.
The group and the website have the aim of providing ideas for cheap recipes and meal plans for those with a very low budget and also for those who wish to cut costs.
Links will also be available to our other Facebook groups which compliment Feed Yourself for £1 a day.

We are also providing meal plans, shopping lists and advice for those who need ideas, and links for help from organisations such as Foodbanks and Citizens Advice Bureau.
There are also low budget meals which fit in with our sister group ” Food-Surviving on 50p a day”.

How did £1 a day start?
I am a member of a Few money-saving/budget related Facebook groups. I enjoyed most of them for quite some time but got a bit disillusioned and frustrated when some of them started getting nasty.
I mainly made food posts-although I read and contributed to budget-related things in general. I was in one group one evening when things were getting very critical relating to budget meals-really cheap meals and there were a few very judgemental people in the group who did not seem to grasp the concept that for some people-nutrition was not the number one consideration-it was filling your belly that really mattered!
Great if you can have both-in that ideal fairytale world that some folk still live in but the reality is that is not the way the world turns. I started thinking-wouldn’t it be nice if there was a group dedicated to food and budgeting where no judgements were made-where the Admin never let arguments take place-where the recipes were not super cook or top chef in origin-recipes for people with very little skills as well as interesting recipes for those with more skills. A site where the skilled would share their knowledge and experience with everyone-people with patience and empathy!
Whew! I ask a lot!!!
Well-I had joined a few of course but never found that site. I am not sure it existed. I had the dream of one-I knew how it should be and got a little fed up with negative attitudes-as did a few others on the same site sharing my online conversation. It was at that point-that spur of that momentous decision to act-that Feed Yourself For £1 a day was born!
I had previously been inspired by Thrifty Lesley and Jack Monroe but I’d never looked at the concept of £1 a day. As I don’t buy newspapers and rarely watch television I was also unaware of other articles and blogs where this was taking place.
My first interest in blogging began years previously when I regularly contributed to the forums of money-saving experts. https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/index.php This led me to a great website which is still a favourite and one I keep revisiting. http://cheap-family-recipes.org/index.html There are fantastically detailed menu plans on there-now need prices updating but at a guess-add 30% to the cost of each one-it is fairly close.
I was inspired
It was only after setting up my own £1 a day that I realised! I was very pleased to see that Lesley Cooper (Lesley Negus)had already started it a lot earlier -I’d seen her recipes but not the £1 a day blog.
The night I set up my group I really wondered if I was a bit mad-whether there would be any interest-whether I would get serious interest from those who needed such a group-whether people would assume we lived on junk food-I really did not know how things would work out.
I wondered if I was expecting too many people-I guessed a lot of people would say it was impossible(they did)but I knew that I could do it because I did it often.
Now, if I can do something-so can thousands if not millions of others as I am just a pretty average human being so I put my faith in what I was doing and why I was doing it to help others who needed to eat on a really tight budget. So here we are today!
We are growing fast
We currently have 235,000+ members on the Facebook group with some fantastic ideas. That is the place to ask for help and ideas.
