Cheap Veg Wars

Lidl's supermarket/grocery store

Cheap Veg! Now, most of you know this so just ignore-but if you do not know this-read on. When you buy fresh veg from a market or farm shop or when you grow it yourself it has no date stamped on it.

How do you know if it is fresh or safe to eat?

Honestly, with veg, you can tell if it still looks good or not.

Why are there dates on the bags then?

These were invented for stock rotation-so the shops know which stock they have had the longest. The dates on these can be ignored.

The veg showing 23rd Dec or whatever will still be good all over Christmas if you go by the info below.

Some supermarkets are beginning to remove the dates from prepacked fruit and vegetable I am glad to find.

So-buy your cheap vegetables, come home and take them out of those nasty polythene bags that make them sweat and rot.

Put them in your salad drawer or in a cotton or paper bag or a cardboard box somewhere cool, in a garage, on your veranda, in the garden or wherever.

Potatoes need cool and dark.

Garlic should not be in the fridge but in a cool cupboard in the dark. If you want to prepare your veg now to save time for Christmas you can do this and freeze it

I blanch mine but it is a personal preference. Potatoes will last many weeks if stored correctly. You must blanch or precook these before freezing them as otherwise, they go black.

Enjoy your cheap vegetables and save money will well store veg for many weeks to come.
