Food Swaps: Custard Powder

Custard being poured onto a cake in a white dish, with strawberries on a wooden table

In “normal times” we take our ability to shop for granted. We normally have full availability and lots of choices. It is then difficult for us to think how we are going to manage in times like we now face-with restrictions.

It becomes increasingly important that we learn to adapt our ideas and change our ways.

As well as providing basic cheap recipes I am going to add ideas for swapping foods and ingredients. It will take a little while so I will be updating it as fast as I can.

Some of the things we rely on come partially made for us and we just add a few ingredients to them. It becomes all too easy to rely on these without realising that the main ingredients are things we may already have in our cupboards. Convenience is great-although it can also be expensive. However-we are facing a great deal of inconvenience at the moment so let’s get our thinking caps on and look at alternative ingredients.

One I often make is custard.

Custard powder-I’m thinking of Birds custard powder or other own branded one here, is basically just cornflour with a little flavouring and colouring. so you can follow the instructions on the tub and use cornflour, a little yellow colouring if you wish and a little drop of vanilla flavouring. Then follow the directions on the tub.

If you normally use the packet variety that is the same but also contains sugar and dried milk.

As above, but make up some milk with powder and water or make up some evaporated milk, or you can use any type of plant milk such as soya, or indeed of course fresh cows milk or long life UHT.
