Fancied doing some baking today so I made an apple crumble and a large apple scone
Ingredients
- 8 oz self raising flour
- pinch of salt
- 2 oz margarine or butter or non dairy spread
- 2 oz sugar
- Approx 125 ml milk or plant milk
- I added 2 oz sultanas or a large apple chopped into cubes or both if you like.
- A teaspoon of baking powder if you wish
- Some mixed spices such as cinnamon if you wish.
Method
- Mix all ingredients together to form a pliable dough. Not too sticky. Add a bit more flour if you need to.
- You need to be able to handle it and shape it.
- Flour a baking tray-yes-flour not grease.
- Flatten the scone onto the tray so it is “pizza shaped” or rectangular for slices.
- Make cuts into it as you would a pizza .
- You can either cut these as 6 scones or make a ball and flatten it on a tray as I have. I don’t grease the tray I sprinkle it with flour.
- Brush with milk. Gas 5 /190 c electric until they look right. Most recipes say 15 minutes.
- I find it takes a little longer but mine is not a fan oven.
The cost of the scones is approx 65p as of 2/8/23 allowing for one shop bought apple

Personally I always do scones as a huge circle to then cut up . Works well and less faff . That idea originally came from you
Wow! Glad to be of help. It certainly makes life easier and you can cut them any shape or size you like of course/ Have you tried the double decker scones too?
I’ve just made these with a slightly different ingredient. I have added dates to the apple and also, instead of using margarine or butter I use 1 1/2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. I drizzled it in and mixed it in the same method as I make the easy peasy dumplings.
I made another change also. Instead of sugar, I used 2 dessertspoons of Splenda granulated sweetener. It is 4 times as sweet as sugar so you need to use it sparingly. This was a good guess. Finally, I broke the mixture into 4 pieces and placed in the Actifry. I pressed each piece down with my hand, keeping the mixture clear of the rotary in the middle. REMOVE the stirring blade for this.
I timed it for 15 minutes to cook and it was perfect. I’ve been longing to try some baking in the Tefal Actifry for ages,
Hmm is anyone else having problems with the images on this blog loading? I’m trying to determine if its a problem on my end or if it’s the blog. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Hi. Thanks for letting me know. One of the images seemed to be missing from when I updated it. Hopefully it is now working as it should do
