Maybe you don’t want a whole turkey this year, or maybe times are difficult and you need to save some money. This is a great idea by Stephanie
For those of you looking for a cheap alternative to a turkey. This is Stephanies tried and tested invention.
You may like to vary this recipe if you don’t like turkey and use chicken or beef instead. Many possibilities.
If you manage to get a suitable pack of “cooking bacon” this will work instead of streaky bacon.
Pauper’s Christmas Dinner
Ingredients
- 500g minced turkey
- 1 level tsp salt
- 1 tsp soy sauce
- one beaten egg
- Stuffing
- smoked streaky bacon
I used half the mince mixture and added onions and breadcrumbs to the remainder to make turkey burgers
Method
- Roll an oblong of stuffing.
- Cover in the mince mixture.
- Lay streaky bacon out as a cover
- Put loaf in the bacon and cover as in the photo
-
I cooked on top of veg and little stock for 5hrs on low in slow pot.
Removed and crisped in oven on 220°c approx 25 mins.
You can brown your parboiled roast potatoes, carrots and parsnips at the same time to save energy

Made this last night using pork mince it was delicious will make again . Thanks for posting the recipe
Thanks, I will definitely be trying this. ♥
Excuse my ignorance but when do we use the
beaten egg
Although this recipe not created by myself, reading through it again I’d say it is either to be mixed in with the stuffing or as a final glaze before basking. I’d opt for the glaze.
Add to the mince, onions, breadcrumbs etc
