Savory Spicy Mince

Spicy savoury mince

I’ve had this recipe for many years, my hubby loves mince and onions and gravy which weirdly is something I have never got to grips with, it never comes out well.

So I tweaked and added and took away until I got this. It’s quite a good shepherd layer under the mash too.

Time about 30 minutes.

You need a frying pan!

Ingredients

  • 250 g to 500 g mince (any kind)
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 medium carrot
  • ½ teaspoon each of Coriander, Cinnamon, Nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon Chilli powder or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Paprika (smoked is great)
  • 3 tablespoons tomato puree
  • 1 tin chopped tomatoes
  • 1 stock cube (complimentary to the meat)
  • 300 ml boiling water
  • Salt and pepper
  • Optional: Celery stick chopped, any other veg or pulses

Method

  1. Finely chop the onion and carrot
  2. Make the stock up in the water
  3. Preheat your frying pan, add the mince with the onion and carrot. Cook on high heat until the mince is sealed.
  4. Add the other ingredients and stir in. Turn down, cover and leave to bubble for 30 minutes. Stir and serve.

Pricing

Allowing 5p for each spice and using pork and beef mince 350g works out at approximately £2.70 or 68p per person for 4 servings.
