Tinned Potatoes versus Fresh Potatoes

Tinned potatoes versus fresh. Which do you think are the cheapest?
There are many views on this, one being that you can buy a tin of potatoes for about 59p in Aldi whereas a bag costs more.
Obviously, there is the convenience of a tin, ready peeled and ready cooked.
Some will also mention the cost of cooking potatoes.

So there are the Aldi potatoes (link above)and their drained weight is 345g. I’ve chosen Aldi because they are either the cheapest or one of the cheapest for these.

That works out at £1.71 per kilo. Yes-you, read that correctly!
Now the cheapest potatoes I’ve found fresh are in Home Bargains and they come in a 2-kilo bag for 79p or you can buy a 7.5-kilo bag for £1.99.
That works out at about 40p per kilo and 27p per kilo.

Wherever you buy potatoes for this comparison look at the cost per kilo. If it is less than £1.71 per kilo you are onto a winner. Always check price per kilo not price per bag as the look of a product in its packaging can be a little misleading.

Yes-that is cheap! Very cheap!

If you want something for standby in an emergency, one or two tins can be a good idea but fresh potatoes keep well as long as you take them out of the plastic bag
as soon as you get home, and either pop them into the veg tray in your fridge or store them in a paper or cotton bag in a cool dark place such as a shed or garage.
So you have tinned ones at £1.80 per kilo or fresh ones at as low as 27p per kilo.
It is a no-brainer really!

The other reason I prefer fresh potatoes is of course because you can do so many more things with them.
